“Mayong Adlaw” as they say in Ilonggo or Good day! For our New Year celebration Shine and I decided to go to her home province of Iloilo to be with her Parents and sisters, also one of her sisters is getting married and so a grand celebration is prepared for the whole family. Sadly we were only able to stay in Iloilo of a few days as the holidays are ending and everyone is busy for the wedding so we were not able to go travel a lot. Luckily just a day before the wedding we managed to slip a tour to one of the towns of Iloilo, Leon. Leon is popular as the summer capital of Iloilo because of the Bucari mountain range, just 36 kilometres away from Iloilo city or just around 30 minutes van ride you will be able to reach the town of Leon and another 30 minutes to reach Bucari.

Shine and I are really fund of climbing mountains, here in Luzon I think we already climbed at least 4 relatively easy mountains and for our first trip in Iloilo together why not try one.  Bucari is already developed as a picnic park just like Baguio, going there is not that easy since there’s no public transportation regularly traveling from Leon, and your only other option is habal-habal or the single motorcycle where the driver will balance three or more passengers. The road is mixed of flat road and rough road and if you’re lucky enough rain will make your travel extra difficult.

Arriving in Bucari, Yes it deserves to be the summer capital of Iloilo; the temperature is just perfect you will feel chilly once you arrive at their picnic park. It’s perfect for photo shoots and just to get away from the city and smell the fresh air. You can rent Picnic tables for the day or even a cottage if you’re planning to stay overnight, but their main attraction is the Mansiga Peak. From their picnic grounds Mansiga peak is just a 45 minutes’ walk just an easy climb (as you can see shine is wearing a skirt and rubber shoes like she’s just going to the mall) so even inexperienced climbers can do it to.

Too bad when we get there a typhoon is currently passing so the view of the city of Leon and the rest of the mountain range is hard to catch and our climb is a bit slippery so that’s the one to watch out for.

Reaching the peak is very much energizing, the reason I love climbing mountains is the feeling of conquering something, being able to see a place in a different perspective and being able to appreciate things that we should be taking care of as a human and letting go of our selfish desires.

It was a bit foggy but there are moments where the clouds went clear and we saw the rest of the mountain range if a water fall is nearby, it would be definitely one of my favourite place in Iloilo. Did you guys enjoy our trip? We hope one day you will personally experience what shine and I Experienced, See you on the next!
